Summer Saltz goes shopping with her mom and gets a pair of sassy white sunglasses and a pink cupcake purse. A lady in the store tells her she looks so Hollywood. She doesn't know what that means, but it must be special. That evening her parents are having a party and she is planning on showing off her new sunglasses and purse. She prepares for the big evening with a series of fun events just to have her best friend Molly show up with the same Hollywood sunglasses. She is a bit upset, but decides she can share the spotlight. Summer's dog Penelope causes Summer to break her new sunglasses. Summer learns what Hollywood really is from her mom. She realizes showing off doesn't pay off. Summer sees Molly playing the following day and Molly is kind enough to give Summer her sunglasses because she realized how special they were to Summer. There are several humorous learning lessons throughout the book, including a food chart and a map of California.
